M83: Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts
Buy! - (Mute)
This French duo use old buzzing analog synthesizers and drum machines to create a massive, blissed-out sound on their second album, which was originally released last year in England but is only now being released in the US (the new US version also comes with a bonus disc of odds ‘n’ ends). It’s truly remarkable how they manage to generate so much emotional warmth out of such supposedly cold and sterile sounds – while others who use old synths often end up in chilly outer space, M83 sound like they’re exploring the transcendent beauty and epic grandeur of the heavens. Comparisons can be made to Air, Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine, but M83’s music more often reflects its own distinctively celestial sphere. 7/28/2004 - Don Yates
