The Fiery Furnaces: Blueberry Boat
Buy! - (Rough Trade)
This brother-and-sister duo takes open inspiration from The Who’s early rock-opera experiments (“A Quick One While He’s Away,” “Rael”) on their exhilarating (if occasionally disorienting) second album, a wild, dizzying ride through a musical funhouse with the duo leaping from one style to another, often many times in the course of one song. You’ll hear bits of blues, cabaret, ‘60s psych-pop, prog-rock, punk primitivism, synth-pop, saloon piano, sea chanteys and lots more spiced with zany carnival and otherworldly sci-fi sounds. Delightfully surreal lyrics add to the playful atmosphere. Blueberry Boat sounds like it was conceived by precocious children with attention-deficit disorder: Sometimes tiring but often charming, it’s sure to be one of the most distinctive albums released this year. 6/21/2004 - Don Yates
