Beastie Boys: To the 5 Boroughs
Buy! - (Capitol)
The veteran New York rap group sounds like they still have something left to prove on their first album in six years. To the 5 Boroughs is a strong return to the hip hop basics, with a stripped-down, party-rockin’ old-school sound featuring the rap trio trading sharp rhymes over hard, funky beats, along with some wicked cutting and scratching from DJ Mixmaster Mike. As usual, they work in lots of clever pop-culture references and flash plenty of irreverent humor, but while there’s lots of fun to be had, the album also has a serious side: The Beasties take some sharp jabs at the Bush administration, while also celebrating and paying heartfelt homage to their battle-scarred but resilient hometown. 6/10/2004 - Don Yates
