The Polyphonic Spree: Together We're Heavy
Buy! - (Hollywood)
This Dallas band’s debut album didn’t really do justice to their sheer hugeness – not only their size (20+ members), but also their epic live sound. While that first album was only intended as a demo, this time they get a real production budget to work with, and they put it to good use on this massive-sounding recording of symphonic psych-pop featuring a wide variety of orchestral instrumentation. The choir sounds as blissed-out as before, though occasional shades of darkness can be found in frontman Tim DeLaughter’s latest batch of songs, and his fragile, high vocals (reminiscent of the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne) give them additional poignancy. 6/1/2004 - Don Yates
