The Streets: A Grand Don't Come for Free
Buy! - (Vice/Atlantic)
The second album from the Streets (aka London’s Mike Skinner) is another compelling showcase for his remarkable storytelling abilities. A Grand Don’t Come for Free is a concept album based around a slacker guy who loses a bunch of cash (a 1000 pounds – hence the album title) and his subsequent search for it. Along the way he gambles, gets drunk and high, and falls in and out of love. Out of such everyday events, Skinner weaves an assortment of seemingly mundane details that brilliantly illuminate his slacker narrator’s tragicomic life. And with the beats and other musical elements being more Spartan than the debut, the focus is very much on the lyrics and Skinner’s conversational rap style. 5/24/2004 - Don Yates
