The Magnetic Fields: i
Buy! - (Nonesuch)
Stephin Merritt is back with his first Magnetic Fields album since 1999’s critically acclaimed three-CD set 69 Love Songs, and while it’s not as ambitious as that monumental release, the new album has plenty of its own intimate charms. Featuring 14 songs that all begin with the letter “i,” the album features a more personal songwriting approach while also ditching the electronics that have always been a part of the band’s sound in favor of a more acoustic-oriented chamber-pop. The more traditional sound is a seamless fit for Merritt’s songs, which perhaps more than ever before hearken back to the literate styles of classic Tin Pan Alley songwriters. 5/3/2004 - Don Yates
