New Jersey isn't exactly known to be a country music haven, but this
Jersey honky tonker has one of this year's most refreshing debuts. The
sound is somewhat similar to Wayne Hancock -- steeped in late '40s-early
'50s honky tonk, but with less western swing than Wayne and more barroom
Ray Price (especially on the great shuffle tune "Halls of Smoke & Wine").
Moot's voice has a strong rural twang, and quavers and breaks in ways
reminiscent of Hank Williams. The raw, stripped-down production is
courtesy of Pete Anderson (best-known as Dwight Yoakam's long-time
guitarist and producer). 4/8/2004
