Modest Mouse: Good News for People Who Love Bad News
Buy! - (Epic)
While these Northwest favorites have released some remarkable albums through the years, this one may very well be their best. The Modest Mouse touchstones are still there – seemingly ramshackle songs with multiple tempo changes held together with memorably distinctive hooks and melodies, along with Isaac Brock’s quirky, often dark and highly personal lyrics put across with a limited but expressive voice that moves easily from aching vulnerability to raw anger. A bit of blues and New Orleans jazz creeps into the mix this time – the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is even featured on a couple of songs, and a fairly strong Tom Waits influence hovers over a few tunes – but what really sets this album apart is the increased confidence shown in the songwriting and performances. A truly great indie-rock band at the top of their game. 4/5/2004 - Don Yates
