While this Detroit band’s lead singer Jason Stollsteimer might unfortunately be better known today as the literal punching bag of former mentor Jack White thanks to their well-publicized brawl, the Von Bondies fully deliver on their second studio album. They’ve gotten tighter, and their songs are sharper now, with a brash sound combining fuzzy guitar riffs and primal rock rhythms. Garage-rock may be in danger of being deluged with hype and uninspired bands, but it’s hard to deny the Von Bondies’ visceral garage-punk shot through with dirty blues and glam-rock drama. 3/8/2004
