The Coral: Magic and Medicine
Buy! - (Deltasonic/Columbia)
On their second album, this British band tones down the weirdness of their impressive debut, offering up a more streamlined version of their wildly eclectic, ‘60s-influenced sound. Gone are the sea chanteys and much of the Beefheartian quirkiness, replaced by an impressive evocation of expansive ‘60s folk-rock, garage and psychedelia. The album actually came out last year in England, and is just now being released in the US. The US edition comes with a bonus CD of the band’s third album, the limited-edition Nightfreak & the Sons of Becker. It’s a more ramshackle affair that was casually recorded in a week. While many of the songs are pretty sketchy, there are also some nice moments. 2/16/2004 - Don Yates
