Serge Gainsbourg: Aux Armes Et Caetera
Buy! - (Sunnyside/Mercury)
In 1979, this eccentric French pop composer journeyed to Jamaica to record a roots-reggae album. While the idea sounds bizarre, the album works quite well, mainly thanks to some stellar accompaniment including the great rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, organist Ansel Collins and the I-Threes on backing vocals. And Gainsbourg’s gravelly, lecherous vocals are surprisingly effective in a roots-reggae context. This expanded 2-CD edition includes the original album, along with new dub versions and yet another set of dub versions accompanied by a variety of reggae toasters and singers. 2/2/2004 - Don Yates
