With all three band members now living in Portland, Sleater-Kinney were able to work more closely together when writing songs for One Beat, their sixth album and one of their best yet. The band tackles thorny subject matter (both political and personal, along with the connections between) with utter confidence, and they seamlessly incorporate some additional instrumentation at times (keyboards, strings, horns, even theramin) while maintaining a fierce punk edge. 8/15/2002
