The musical chameleon takes another surprising turn on his latest album by digging deep inside to find artistic inspiration in the recent breakup of a relationship. The sound's gorgeously melancholy orchestral pop with some folk/country underpinnings, the lyrics are as plain-spoken and heartfelt as Beck's likely to ever get, and his desolate vocals here capture the right mournful tone. 9/15/2002
