Richard Buckner: Devotion + Doubt
Buy! - (MCA)
Buckner and producer J.D. Foster have created a much more fully-realized record than Bloomed, Buckner's fine debut. The new album has a spare, dream-like sound that evokes the vast, empty spaces of the desert, or maybe just a fella left alone with his thoughts in the dark, haunted by what he's left behind. Often, Buckner's singing barely rises above a whisper. The stellar accompaniment includes ace Austin pickers Lloyd Maines and Champ Hood, along with Giant Sand's Howe Gelb and avant-guitarist Marc Ribot. Foster gets a much more intimate sound out of Buckner's voice, highlighting its grainy texture. His intimate singing works beautifully with the imagistic lyrics about lost love, which are often as suggestive and evocative as Jay Farrar's. A truly great record. 3/15/1997 - Don Yates
