Grimes unveiled a new video on YouTube today of a song called “Pretty Dark.” She claims the song is “NOT A SINGLE lol just a demo” but that’s also what she said when she dropped “Realiti” in 2015 and that ended up on Art Angels, so perhaps that line is just a way for her to feel less pressure throwing songs out. The clip is relatively simple, focusing on a selfie video of Grimes using filters, while the background images feature high-quality footage from unreleased videos DP’d by Mac Boucher.
According to Grimes, since her upcoming record is taking so long to finish, she’s planned to just “ start casually dropping stuff as I see fit. Been doing this exercise where I try to write and produce a whole song in like ~1-2 hrs.” She’s also making an AR musical in which there are different “sub-members” within Grimes “(The art angels, as it were lol). (Kinda like the Loona sub-bands X the Gorillaz?..psychedelic post k pop-ish fake band for my non-Grimes musical ventures).”
The character for the song “Pretty Dark” is aptly named Dark. The song is honestly an amazingly well-made pop song, so hopefully it ends up somewhere besides YouTube.
