Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription.  This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unrealeased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear.  Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Bound and Boundless" by Do Make Say Think from 2017's Stubborn Persistent Illusions LP, out on Constellation Records.

Do Make Say Think - Bound and Boundless (MP3)One could call Do Make Say Think post-rock, but while Toronto band has released seven records which fall under this "nothing term", each LP contains its own quirks and variations on their collective sound. Their second-to-last record, 2009's Other Truths, at times harshened the band's sound while also expanding their capabilities to create sonic atmospheres. Released last month, Stubborn Persistent Illusions is Do Make Say Think's first record in eight years and shows the band continuing to dissolve and manipulate tropes of post-rock to gorgeous effect.

Today's featured song, "Bound and Boundless", technically takes up two tracks on Stubborn Persistent Illusions (4 and 5), and spans over 12 minutes. The first segment of the piece ("Bound") focuses on the sound of blinking, vibrating guitars, which create layers of gorgeous noise over eventually resounding drums. "And Boundless," however, acts as a continued crescendo, building off the first segment. Heralded by a blaring, repetitive guitar, the track gains constant momentum. Though more dissonant and intense than the comparatively pastoral "Bound," the two tracks interact to form a complete musical suite.

Do Make Say Think don't have any tour dates announced at this time, but keep checking their website and Facebook for updates and more information. In the meantime, watch the band perform their gorgeous track "Goodbye Enemy Airship" at a packed Sonic Boom Records.
