Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription.  This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear.  Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Wrong For You” by Molly Burch from her 2017 album, Please Be Mine, released on Captured Tracks.

Molly Burch - Wrong For You (MP3)The story goes that Molly Burch recorded the tracks for her debut record, Please Be Mine, over the course of one day at Cross Record Studios in Dripping Springs, Texas, motivated by the hourly rate and a small budget. This feat is made all the more impressive by the gentle ease and depth of sound on Burch's full-length. The excellent musicianship mixes with Burch's voice to conjure a country-tinged haze reminiscent of 1970s Laurel Canyon recordings or the more melancholy Patsy Cline tracks. Burch has said in interviews that she started writing music to compliment her distinctive voice, inspired by the music of her childhood (Billie Holliday, Nina Simone) as well as modern influences, such as Weyes Blood or Angel Olsen. Though one can identify elements of these artists in Burch's songwriting, her songs have a remarkable effervescence and ease matched by the precision of her vocal stylings.

Today's featured track, "Wrong For You," finds Burch lamenting lost, misbegotten love, the repeated refrain of "I know that I am so very wrong for you" gaining additional power as Burch details the emotional fallout of a relationship. The guitar work rings brightly above Burch's voice, joined by gently circling piano and organ. One is left with a trace of a rapidly maturing songwriter and the glimmer of a faded relationship.

Molly Burch will be performing live in Seattle at The Timbre Room on May 5th. Look for more about Molly on her website and Facebook page. For now, here's the sun-kissed video for her track "Please Be Mine," the title-track from her debut LP:
