Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Songbirds" by Ghosts I've Met from the upcoming self-released album Night Repair.

Ghosts I've Met - Songbirds (MP3)

Hearing intimate cinematic music from a singer-songwriter like Sam Watts of Ghosts I've Met feels as if each song is personally being sung to you like a lullaby. Not only does the Seattle project's tranquil ballads conjure a robustly Iron & Wine sensibility, but also a slightly harrowing mist of vulnerability. Originally Michigan-born, Watts is the band's sole member yet he surrounds himself with other talented artists to record his albums, which are definite wind-downers - they're earnest, effortless, and fully encompassing in the most relaxing way. With his forthcoming LP, Night Repair, we can expect more tender aubades to evoke a soundtrack-to-life quality for mind-clearing moments like being on a rooftop staring at the stars or night drives in solitude without a destination. On it, Watts is joined by The Antlers' Michael Lerner, Darren Jessee of Ben Folds Five and Seattle engineer Andy Meyer, and together, they flood listeners of "Songbirds", today's featured song, with ripples of ardent acoustics and ambient foregrounds that cut through an ominous, yet hopeful wish. Emotional release, synthesized riffs, and panoramic imagery ebb and flow throughout the four-minute easy-listener.

You won't have to wait too long to hear the rest of the forthcoming LP, as Ghosts I've Met have their album release show coming up on June 30 at The Crocodile with openers Shanandoah Davis, Julia Massey, and Planes on Paper. Admission is only $10 and is 21+. More info for their Thursday show can be found here. For now, check out what Ghosts I've Met are up to via their Facebook page.
