Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Get Out” by Frightened Rabbit from their forthcoming album, Painting of a Panic Attack, due April 8th on Canvasback.

Frightened Rabbit - Get Out (MP3)The pains of love lost are fucking hard to get over--the fever dream withdrawal, the physical aches, the haunting memories of good times and bad. Over the course of Frightened Rabbit’s decade long career, Scott Hutchinson has unfailingly captured this familiar cycle. Frightened Rabbit began as a sort of solo project where Hutchinson had complete creative control and did all of the songwriting, until the five-piece switched things up by making their fourth album, 2013's Pedestrian Verse, more of a collaborative effort. They continued this method with their new album, Painting of a Panic Attack, due out on April 8.

The second single from Painting, “Get Out” speaks to the great frustration of a lingering love that you just can’t shake. The song opens with a stark and lovely image of a woman’s thumb and forefinger, which Hutchinson names his place of worship. His quiet, confessional verses later give way to a punchy chorus where he pleads, “just get out of my heart/she won’t.” Though Hutchinson’s lyrical prowess has remained consistent, the song has an electronic texture that we haven’t heard from Frightened Rabbit before. Its ticking, upbeat nature, in contrast with the lyrics' dark themes, makes for a rich score to your next interior battle.

Frightened Rabbit is embarking on their North American tour at the end of April. There are no Seattle dates listed, but you can still catch them this year at Sasquatch. Be sure to follow their website and Facebook page for updates. In the meantime, here's the music video for “Get Out,” directed by Greg Davenport:
