Although he's spent the last few months contributing as a vocalist to Hercules and Love Affair, John Grant returned to his day job on Sunday afternoon, performing a stark set of wistful tunes from his two solo albums. At first glance, the massive Sasquatch stage at 1 p.m. on a sunny afternoon isn't the most accommodating setting for a relatively stripped-down set of songs about Grant's past life as a drug addict and coming to terms with his HIV-positive diagnosis, but there was a strange beauty to the setting of Grant's performance. Sparsely attended in a way that made the stage all the more cavernous, the solemnity of Grant's voice echoed with a resonance that hadn't been seen up to that point at the festival, creating an atmosphere that only emphasized the darkly romantic nature of his songwriting. Grant himself summed the set up best a few songs in: "Let's try and keep it upbeat. This song is called 'Where Dreams Go To Die'"
