  • After spending days in a hundred year old barn in upstate New York Widowspeak is back with a new album Almanac - and now we can listen to "The Dark Age" from said album. Helped by Kevin McMahon who has worked with Real Estate and Swans, the new songs from the album feature stronger guitar riffs while never losing the layered lilting of Molly's voice - Almanac will be out on Jan 22 via Captured Tracks. • 90s era alt rock group The House of Love has recently finished recording a new album, She Paints Words In Red, over 10 days in studio. To be released April 1 (not a joke) on Cherry Red Records, the notoriously rocky relationships between band members appear to be mended. "It was great to be recording again, and everything went to plan and gelled from the onset. Terry and I have got back to our original working relationship.." said Guy Chadwick. [FACT]

  • Patti Smith has announced a 2013 sequel to her 2010 National Book Award winning Just Kids. Smith said this of her most recent memoir endeavor to NME: "I don't have a big rock 'n' roll lifestyle, a sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll story to tell. I think I have maybe a better story. Through rock 'n' roll I traveled the world, worked with my late brother and, best of all, that's how I met Fred. It changed my life in many unexpected ways, so I have my story to tell." [Pitchfork]

  • Brittney Howard of Alabama Shakes was robbed at gunpoint recently - apparently two 15 or 16 year old hooligans approached her and friends as they sat on a porch after a show with her side project Thunderbitch. The two made off with several cell phones and a small amount of cash, unfortunately for the apparently poorly informed robbers, who should know that bands on porches in Nashville probably don't carry much worth stealing. [Exclaim!]

  • Boston based trio Fat Creeps released a video for their song "Daydreaming," which is dreamy in the punky poppy 90s distortion sense of the word - follow the band through a grocery mart and the park while they hop around playing their guitars. Oh - did I mention the whole video is hidden behind a screen of VHS fuzz? [Stereogum]

Sufjan Stevens isn't the only one taking on Christmas. The XX covered Wham!'s  "Last Christmas" on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. It's just how you would expect it: a bit too serious for the cheesy lyrics, but then again The XX can make pretty much anything sound pout-perfectly pretty. And they sound l…
