The London-via-Australia duo Geowulf turned ears with a run of sharp singles last year, and they offer up pristine, sophisticated sunshine pop on “Hideway.” Over rolling digital beats, wave-riding keyboards and swooning guitars courtesy of Toma Banjanin, singer Star Kendrick paints a portrait of a frustrating romance distinctly at odds with the summery, winsome vibes around her.

“What are you frightened of?/you never opened up/all you did was hide away/darling please/why do you shut me off/I tried to show you love.” She’s giving it her all, only to be left standing by herself via a partner who won’t meet her halfway, one too afraid to open up. There’s frustration and annoyance in her voice, especially the way she twists up  “away.” But there’s also determination. If they won’t show her the love she deserves, she makes it clear she’ll dust herself off and find someone who will.

There are no local dates from Geowulf at the moment, but you can follow them on Facebook here and watch their video for “Saltwater” below.
