Foday Musa Suso6/23/2009
Legendary Gambian musician Foday Musa Suso is a jali (West African bard, praise singer and storyteller) of the Mandinka tribe, now settled in Seattle after 32 years in Chicago. His instrument is the kora, a 21-string harp-lute carved from a calabash gourd that some have cited as the origin of the guitar sound of American Delta Blues. In Suso's virtuosic hands, it is an elegant and stately instrument capable of both polyphonic and polyrhythmic delicacy and grace.
