Donna Gaines examines the phenomena of rock and roll fan communities from a sociological perspective with wit and acumen. She observes that the world of rock and roll fandom performs an integrative function for modern marginalized individuals, similar to the role of religion: restoring meaning, hope and providing a sense of relatedness with the world. Gaines examines the phenomenon of faithful fan communities that remain devoted to rock icons like Johnny Thunders, Joey Ramone, Kurt Cobain and others long after the artist’s deaths.
