Kenny Garrett bio
Throughout his career, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has explored a vast spectrum of music. His muscular, melodic playing can be heard on the recordings by artists as definitive and diverse as jazz legends Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, rock royalty Sting, Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen, and progressive rap pioneer Guru. A 1997 Grammy nominee, Kenny Garrett sees his musical mission to bridge cultural and generational gaps.

Recorded in California during the week of September 11, 2001, Garrett's latest release "Happy People" not only manifests a snapshot of Kenny's musical vision, but also reflects the resilience of mankind in the face of global adversity. Garrett, his band, co-producer Marcus Miller, and very special guest, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, all persevered during this trying time to create an album brimming with spiritual oneness and optimism.

Garrett continues down a path of composition that started in earnest on his 1997 album, "Songbook." After a series of acclaimed albums interpreting others' material he was honored with a Grammy nomination for his first collection of all original works. In Kenny's world, probing jazz improvisation meets profoundly touching Far Eastern melodies in church, tangos get played in 6/8 time, Tiger Woods gets a theme song and the warmly nurturing sound of the female voice scats a message to all the happy people - to dance.
