SIFF 2014 Face The Music Review: Shake the Dust and Q&A with Director Adam Sjöberg

Posted: 2014-06-10 12:00:45

Shake the Dust
(Directed by Adam Sjöberg, USA, 2014, 108 minutes)

A world premiere of Shake the Dust was well-received from very excited local b-boys, b-girls, DJs, and music lovers at the Egyptian Theater that SIFF is now managing. The movie was beautifully photographed and equally, the soundtrack was excellent. I was happy the mix was loud and clean with a mixture of original disco and hip-hop classics. The music score was well executed by Seattle-based composer Sean Dimond.

Shake the Dust opens with breakdancing footage, shot by Thomas Edison in the Middle East in 1898. This feature-length documentary takes you closer to the world of breakdancing and the life of b-boys and b-girls. From the ghetto of Colombia, Cambodia, Uganda, and Yemen, filmmaker Adam Sjöberg follows the dancers, DJs, and hip-hop artists. Their stories of life and philosophies are told in their voices and display their incredible dancing skills. Executive producer and rapper NAS also provides original music for the film.

Song of the New Earth
(Directed by Ward Serrill, USA, 2014, 89 minutes)

One day, a man named Tom received a question from someone, or something, from the planet Venus through unknown dimensions. He was asked if he could sing a song of the new earth to save lost human souls. Kenyon hopes to be a person who guides lost souls into the light with music and songs.

Ward Serrill’s new documentary is about Tom Kenyon, a musician who lives in Orcas Island and gives spiritual workshops and psychotherapy using music and sound. His music is built with a backbone of his own experiences and studies in Religion, Psychology, and Acoustic Sound Research. His instruments are the Singing Bowl, bells, drums, and his voice. In his live performance footage, Kenyon displays many interesting sounds and music through these instruments and through his unique mixture of voice and song and his animal spirit sounds.
