Larry Mizell Jr. : Street Sounds

Credentials:
OK- I’m pretty much a total noob to radio, but I am a bit of a jack of all trades when it comes to music ‘round these parts. I’m honored to take the reins of KEXP’s Sunday night hiphop show, which I’ve been listening to for over half my life.

I’ve been called “the Hunter S. Thompson of Seattle music” (the Seattle Times’ words, not mine) for my work writing the hiphop column “My Philosophy” for The Stranger since 2004. I know way too much about all things having to do with rap music.

I am an active musician, MC’ing in local hiphop outfits They Live!, Cancer Rising, and Nite Owls (at last count). Music is my utmost passion and I had no choice in the matter- my dad is Larry Mizell (of legendary 70’s production team The Mizell Brothers), and my mother worked at Crystal Sound in Hollywood, where I was a constant nuisance; I got to meet Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone and plenty others before I could wear long pants.

I’m a tireless advocate for Seattle’s diverse and talent-rich hiphop scene, and local music in general. I’ve long loved and listened to KEXP since it was KCMU and I had a curfew and a wispy mustache- and I’m proud stoked beyond words to be a part of their proud tradition of bringing great music to the airwaves.
