Mobile Streaming

Mobile Streaming

KEXP is now offering a live stream for mobile phones and handheld devices. Listeners with web-enabled phones can point to kexp.org and automatically view a new mobile version of the KEXP website. To receive streaming audio, listeners must use a web-enabled phone or mobile device equipped with a media player and subscribe to a wireless carrier’s data service.

Currently the stream is optimized for mobile devices that offer either WindowsCE or PalmOS. For either device, we are offering a 32K stream. The low bandwidth stream is designed specifically with wireless networks in mind.

For more information read our Mobile Streaming FAQ below, or contact your wireless provider to find out if your plan and phone are right for this service.

Mobile Streaming FAQ

Windows Mobile (PocketPC and Smartphone)
Windows Media 10 Mobile

  • Open kexp.org from your mobile device. You should be automatically redirected to the kexp.org mobile web site.
  • Click on the Windows Media 32k link, and opt to open the link.
  • Windows Media Mobile does not automatically select the best bitrate for the available bandwidth – this seems to be a limitation of Windows Media Player for mobile devices. The player will select the lowest available bitrate stream by default, which is 32k. This should be compatible with the most common mobile networks.
  • That should do it.

If the stream doesn’t work, try refreshing the page. If that doesn’t work, try the following:

  • Open Windows Media Player
  • Select Menu ? Open URL
  • Type mms://media-wm.cac.washington.edu/kexp-live

If the website "current song" doesn’t refresh automatically, refresh the page and it should continue refreshing itself after that.

    PalmOS
    Pocket Tunes

Download pocket tunes DELUXE – this is important, as the basic version doesn’t do streaming. At time of this writing, it costs about $28. Download and install is very easy. Once it’s installed, it can play the 32k mp3 stream.

  • Open kexp.org from your mobile device. You should be automatically redirected to the kexp.org mobile web site.
  • Click the 32k mp3 stream link.
  • Save it to PocketTunes, click yes on the download, save, and open.
  • The stream will start playing in PocketTunes, though you won’t necessarily see it, as the website application will remain visible (assuming PocketTunes is configured to play in the background.. this can be changed in the PocketTunes preferences).
  • Click reload on the website to keep the playlist up to date (it’ll refresh every 30 seconds after reloading).
  • Open the PocketTunes interface (you can get at it from the Treo/PalmOS menu)
  • Click the PocketTunes, menu, which reveals the other menus available in PocketTunes.
  • Click Tools ? Add bookmark. The name of the stream should appear, at which point you can click OK. You can select the bookmark from Tools ? Bookmarks… in the future.
