Underwriting Account Manager – Underwriting Sales Department

KEXP is a non-commercial radio station in Seattle with DJs selecting and broadcasting an eclectic mix of music to listeners around the globe.

You would be a member of a team responsible for developing underwriting and sponsorship revenue from the business community.

The job is sales-based and includes seeking prospective underwriters, proposal-making, presenting the KEXP story and convincing leaders to invest in KEXP. Another big part of the job includes providing timely and high-quality service to our underwriters and sponsors.

The compensation is competitive and the benefits are generous. KEXP’s studios are located in the South Lake Union area of Seattle.

Basic Function: Solicits and obtains underwriting and sponsorship revenue from businesses and organizations in support of KEXP.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Produces sales and manage service for underwriting clients including advertising and public relations agencies.  Cultivates and maintains relationships with assigned underwriting accounts.  Achieves sales goals.
  • Seeks, solicits and cultivates new and prospective underwriters through direct contact with businesses.
  • Consults with clients to develop underwriting proposals and non-broadcast opportunities for underwriting support.  Discovers and interprets underwriter’s business objectives, mission, marketing and community relations activities, goals and priorities.  Analyzes and interprets audience and market research to seek an appropriate match with station listeners.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of current market research to best identify prospective clients and to best service existing clients.
  • Represents the station at meetings and events.
  • Negotiates underwriting packages, pricing, terms and copy that conform to Federal, University and stations policies.  Prepares and writes on-air copy for approval by management.
  • Assists with other fund raising activities as directed. Occasional out-of-state travel is required.  Work sometimes includes evenings and weekends.

Position Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree and three years experience in broadcast sales or other direct sales and/or non-profit fundraising and/or relationship-building experience. Demonstrated skills in sales, presentations, personal communications, organizing & prioritizing work, and computer literacy. Demonstrated ability to self-direct and work independently, while also working effectively in teams. Commitment to consistent high-quality service. Ability to work in an environment of constant demands and frequent interruptions. Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution. Appreciation and understanding of the music KEXP programs. Commitment to maintain confidentiality. Valid driver’s license and use of personal vehicle is required. (Mileage allowance provided.)

Preferred: Familiarity with and appreciation of KEXP programming.

Compensation: Base salary and commissions based on receipts. A well-rounded package of benefits includes: 100% paid health, dental and vision insurance for employee, 95% paid health, dental and vision insurance for family including domestic partner, 100% paid short-term and long-term disability insurance, 11 holidays, accrual of 3 weeks of paid leave and 12 days of sick leave (each year of service adds one day to the annual paid leave to a total of 5 weeks), 403b retirement plan (TIAA-CREF) and Costco membership.
