KEXP RADIO LAUNCHES 14 DAYS: KEXP STREAMING ARCHIVE

Seattle WA, August 2002:
KEXP 90.3 Public Radio announces the launch of 14 Days: KEXP Streaming Archive, which features an audio archive of all KEXP broadcast programs. Users of the KEXP website KEXP.ORG will now be able to listen to an archive of any KEXP program at any time, which will allow the eclectic radio station to deliver its broad mix of music and non-commercial format to more listeners.

The KEXP Streaming Archive enables listeners to easily customize KEXP's radio programming to fit with their schedule - "radio as you want it." For example, if listeners cannot hear a scheduled evening world music program, it will be available the next morning when they arrive at the office. Users will be able to sort and select from the past fourteen days of broadcasts by program, host, date and time. In addition, listeners can browse by genre to discover world, electronic, hip-hop, rock, and roots music in programs throughout KEXP's broadcast schedule.

In a time when many radio stations are limiting their online streaming due to recent copyright and performance fees imposed on digital music, KEXP remains committed to its online service. KEXP's online listening audience has doubled since early 2001 and the station views streaming as a means of building audience and listener support for its eclectic music programming. KEXP's music programming is an adventurous mix and exposes new artists and sounds to listeners, regardless of those artists' commercial success. This programming philosophy is rare in the current landscape of broadcast consolidation, which makes a unique service for KEXP's radio audience as well as worldwide online listeners.

KEXP's Streaming Archive was developed in partnership with the University of Washington (UW) computing and communications group. Back-end technology developed by the UW includes automatic recording and encoding of the broadcast service, a database that stores all media files and data according to program, host, genre and time, and delivery in three Windows Media bit rates to a user-centered interface.

The KEXP Streaming Archive was developed according to DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act 1998) specifications and the user interface was developed by CursiveCode.

Other KEXP.ORG and University of Washington technical developments include the true-CD quality Uncompressed audio stream at 1.4Mbps and the Real Time Playlist, which displays on KEXP.ORG the title and track of the CD being played live on the station. Both the uncompressed stream and the Real Time Playlist were developed by the University of Washington computing and communications group.

KEXP Radio programs a wide variety of music spanning multiple genres, including alternative rock, electronic, world, roots, jazz, hip hop and blues. Listeners enjoy this non-commercial service at 90.3FM in Seattle and throughout the world at www.kexp.org. KEXP Radio has both a technological and a cultural mission and seeks to merge technology and music through new technological developments.

The station is governed by the Friends of KEXP, a non-profit organization operating the station on behalf of the University of Washington, who holds the FCC license. In April 2001, KEXP began a partnership with Experience Music Project in Seattle.

University of Washington computing and communications provides expertise and infrastructure necessary to enable advanced network computing applications and rich information content, and to create the technology environment required to support next-generation tools. The University of Washington computing and communications group provides KEXP with streaming services, technical support, and development of new streaming applications and technical developments.
